Artist Talk: Cristin Millett
Image: Teatro Anatomico 8’ x 19’ x 22’, aluminum pipe, forty-nine chiffon panels with inkjet-transferred imagery

Cristin Millett is currently visiting Australia as a Fulbright Senior Scholar in 2020, during which time she will serve as a resident artist at SymbioticA at the University of Western Australia, studying ectogenesis and ultimately creating a sculptural artificial uterus that will allow viewers to see inside a womb. Tentatively titled “Ex-Utero,” the sculpture is intended to prompt questions and conversations about the socio-cultural impact of ectogenesis, which is the augmentation or replacement of the fecund uterus by a machine.

Exploding traditional disciplinary boundaries, Cristin Millett’s investigations of medicine and its history are integral to her process. Her toolkit of sculptural processes incorporates new advances in digital technology along with established methods of sculpture such as stone carving and bronze casting. The resulting objects and installations prompt a contemporary cultural critique of societal issues surrounding reproduction and gender identity. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows, including at the Villa Strozzi in Florence, the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago, the Exploratorium in San Francisco, and the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia. Millett is a Professor of Art in the School of Visual Arts where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in sculpture. As an Embedded Faculty Researcher in the Arts + Design Research Incubator, she collaborates with colleagues across disciplines working at the intersection of art and health.
